Resolute Class Starship
October
9, 2021
This is a ship that's been in my mind since elementary
school. It started as doodles in math class that were
basically very rough sketches of the movie USS Enterprise.
It later progressed to LEGO, complete with mismatched
bricks, and then into my years modding the Starfleet Command
PC Games.
This latest iteration is a high detail CG model that will be
the foundation point for a number of other projects I have
planned. Here I will be documenting major milestones in the
ship's development in addition to my thought process and
general highlights.
As she stands now, she is untextured (i.e. not painted), and
these renders are meant to highlight the physical detailing
and to help identify any last minute problems before I move
on to slapping paint on her.
At first glance the Resolute appears to be yet another
Constitution class model, namesake of the legendary
Enterprise. I've certainly built plenty of those in the past
for Starfleet Command. The Resolute, before she was called
that, actually started out as a modified Enterprise and
there was a lot of back and forth between the various
iterations throughout the years - parts built for one ended
up being used to upgrade the other.
With so many parts trading between models, it can get
confusing mapping out where everything started. On the
positive side, this gave me inspiration in the "real"
backstory of the Resolute and her sister ships where
components and overall design details carried over.
This version is essentially a similar style of refit that
the Enterprise underwent, with the baseline ship being the
Resolute Class - an older sister to the Constitution. I took
cues from the Motion Picture Enterprise, the cancelled
"Phase II" model and designs, in addition to subtle nods to
the Excelsior, Soyuz, and the "Kelvin-verse" Enterprise from
the more recent movies.
This particular ship represents a 'dead-end' in the Resolute
Refit Program, as issues were discovered during her overhaul
as well as new technology and advancements being developed
by the time she was completed. Parts of the design were
carried forward into the full production run of the program,
and I plan to work up CG models of that version in the
future.
All that aside, even though she may be a one-off, she
certainly has a colorful career ahead of her, and not
necessarily in Starfleet service...
